Had another good session in the estuary today. I got there around 4pm and found Ben just packing up. He'd been out with a 5.3 for about half an hour, but said it was too gusty and he was on and off the plane. I therefore decided to rig a 5.7m and my big (99L) board to keep me going in the lulls.

I was soon out on the water and the sail and board felt fine. Nicely powered up the whole time, and straight back into the normal routine, blast across the estuary, gybe, blast back, chop hop, gybe blast across the estuary. After about ten minutes of this the wind started to fill in so i had to flatten the sail off a bit. I hung on for another half an hour or so, until things just went mad. I went back to the van and measured the wind, getting sand-blasted in the process and it was now a steady 28-29 knots.

So, I quickly rigged my 4.5m, set it nice and flat and stuck it on my wave board and got back out there for an hour of fast and frantic sailing. The chop had picked up a bit and the conditions became more and more challenging as the wind continued to increase. I didn't really do anything exciting, just flat out back and forth across the estuary with a gybe at either end and the odd chop hop. I did try a couple of duck gybes early on, but as the wind picked up, I just played it safe and stuck with what I know.

Packing up was difficult as the wind was now ballistic and the whole beach had truned into a sandstorm, with sheets of sand up to my shoulders. It was weird because you could just see peoples heads as they fought against the wind back to their cars, but their bodies were hidden by the sand!!

I checked the wind again as I was packing up and it was hovering around 33 knots with gust touching 40 knots!!... Where did that come from?
